Gamble

What will you do if you need a 4GB microdrive desperately while nowhere in Hong Kong is selling it yet?

I have bought a Creative Nomad 4GB MuVo2.

I guess no one tried this before.

Hard Drive by Hitachi!

It is just a matter of several screws.

Now I have a new 4GB microdrive!

It got format error message initially. It works fine after being formatted by the Sony DSC F-828.

Now I can take 1041 pictures with the new card.

Note:
It is in fact CHEAPER to buy this Nomad MP3 player than a 4GB microdirve.
Apple annouced a new 4GB ipod mini today, so I expect there will be a further price drop on this model.

I admit don't know the result before the surgery.

452 comments, already

Alright that's brilliant, but what are you going to do with the Nomad? Put the 1GB CF in it? By the way how much does it cost? I am interested in doing the same thing!
Sunny (link) - 08.01.04, 08:53

$3480, I think it will drop price soon as ipod mini released.

I didn't try whether it will work with the 1GB microdrive or whatever CF card.
Andy - 08.01.04, 10:36

Perfect Idea !

Is it 100% OK for 828 ?
Perry - 08.01.04, 15:50

Is it made in Japan for Creative 4G MD ?
Perry - 08.01.04, 15:52

No problem found yet with 828. I will test it more tonight.

I need to check whether it is made in Japan. It isn't with me now.
Andy - 08.01.04, 16:06

Can you say something about the speed of the card in the F828? I'd say it works, but it's got to be very slow.
Frederique - 08.01.04, 16:52

Hello!

Have you try to insert another CF into MP3 ? Is it still worked ?

And also, I belief your way is the cheapest method to get Hitachi 4G Mircodrive and good-quality MP3.
The company will sell its product to another company at a much cheaper price. It is becasue this is the partnership relation.

If 4G MD is avaiable in HK, I belief it will lower than 3.5K.

This is a great idea to get 4G MD!
Perry - 08.01.04, 20:16

If 4G MD is avaiable in HK, I belief it will not lower than 3.5K.
Perry - 08.01.04, 20:18

The speed in 828 is fast and 100% OK.

The MuVo2 is made in Singapore.

4GB microdrive is not yet available in HK. And I think it will be a bit more expensive when available.

I didn't try whether it will still work with another CF. (devil)
Andy - 08.01.04, 23:22

It doesn't work with a 1GB microdrive.
It gives "Media Error" message when I do formatting within the Nomad. MAYBE I need to reload the firmware to it.
Andy - 08.01.04, 23:45

what is the speed of a RAW photo ?
john - 08.01.04, 23:55

How about using this 4G microdrive under 640x480 movie recording fine mode in 828? Is it work? No problem in movie playback in 828? Thanks in advance
Billy - 09.01.04, 00:35

I own an 828 as well and would like to know if EVERYTHING works fine with this 4G card taken out of the mp3 player. As the others have stated, what is the speed like on a RAW photos and taking a 640x480 movie in fine mode? If so, I'm going to order one today!!! Thank you for posting this and thanks for your time.
Tom - 09.01.04, 01:37

Up till now, everything is fine.
The speed of RAW is roughly 15sec.
No problem with the 640fine movie mode.
Andy - 09.01.04, 02:19

iPod Mini is around $1942 (USD 249 suggested retail price)
anyone know whether it's included with 4 GB microdrive. If so, it's very very cheap, better than buy 2 of 1 G MD. Anyway it can only work as 2 GB on my camera...
anders - 09.01.04, 14:15

It isn't a microdrive inside the ipod mini.
Andy - 09.01.04, 14:25

why don't u buy the ipod instead?
antking00 - 09.01.04, 16:55

I need the 4GB microdrive. Only this mp3 player has it inside.
Andy - 09.01.04, 17:03

I have ordered Creative 4G MP3 and I will take it in next week.

Perry - 10.01.04, 14:25

Don't forget to make a report to us.
Andy - 10.01.04, 16:22

Don't worry!
I will share the fun with yours.
Perry - 10.01.04, 16:50

At this moment, I don't worry about the operation of 4G MD with D100 or 828.

I am worried only that I cannot resumed creative MP3 normal by a CF¡@256¡@card or other CF card.

Creative MP 3 is a great MP3. If I discard it, that will be quite pitty.

Really, this is most cheapest way to get 4G MD.
Perry - 10.01.04, 16:58

I think it is nicely made, let me know if you can make it work
Andy - 10.01.04, 17:23

as report reveal (apple website also)
ipod mini is a hard drive, but i don't know that whether it's microdrive or not
anders - 11.01.04, 13:29

I researched quite a bit about the mini Ipod. From what i read it does have the Hitachi 4Gb microdrive. Do you guys have a reason to believe this microdrive has different interface, or any reason why it could not be used?
Gergo - 11.01.04, 16:16

It seems that inside the ipod is an 1 inch drive instead of a microdrive. Correct me if I am wrong.
Andy - 11.01.04, 21:28

it's using Hitachi 4GB. Apple & Hitachi has contact

Good luck and post the result later.

AD,

Yes it is real cheap.
Andy - 12.01.04, 22:18

May i ask what store sells it for $269 after rebate?
Gergo - 13.01.04, 00:17

anystore, you just need to be a student

I looked for retail stores, but i can't find that rebate for $269. Can you give me more info.
Gergo - 15.01.04, 06:24

I found Creative Nomad 4GB MuVo2 today. The price is HK$3490.I want to buy one at $269 too.(monkey)
Ah Keung - 15.01.04, 19:44

I got Creative 4G today. And I take MD out immediately.

I want to copy the OS file before putting it in DC.

It is seems 4G MD cannot be read by PC directly unless formatting it.

How about your creative MP3 now ?
Perry - 16.01.04, 00:15

Perry - try using partition magic to backup the drive image before you modify it.
David - 16.01.04, 14:38

Thank you! David..

I had gave up Creative Mp3
Perry - 16.01.04, 16:36

Perry, don't give up. Someone tried dowloading the firmware to the modified muvo2 (with a 1gb microdrive) and it works! You should try it and give us a report!
Tom - 16.01.04, 18:50

I read your notes, bought a Muvo in the UK today and pulled out the 4G drive. Replaced it with 512M CF and got same error as you. Eventually managed to update FW I think from US Creative website (European site has different structure) using auto update software on web. Still said it was updating FW for 4G unit but correctly undertood the 512M CF. Now have the equivalent of a Muvo X trainer (solid-state shock proof!) and a 4G microdrive for my camera. Not done any exhaustive testing but certainly seems o.k., plays MP3s, appears as HD unit on PC and Mac (Win2000 OSX). New FW also adds features like the FM radio and voice recording (presumably via FM remote unit which I don't have) which were not available on the original shipped firmware The firmware doesn't appear to be stored on the HD as I first thought was the problem. It might make life easier to update the firmware before removing the microdrive, I did it after!. May try my old 1G microdrive sometime, but having a solid-state unit could also be of benfit. Will try the 4G in my EOS300D when that arrives. Thanks for starting me on this quest, I had thought of doing it when the ipod is available in the UK but to see someone has done it is great. I expected to get the microdrive successfully but not that that I would still have a working MP3 player at the end of it. Wonder whether the same will be true with the ipod or whether it will report 4G card not found!
Mark - 17.01.04, 07:01

my friend told me, it's microcenter in Washington DC, it's back order, not in store yet
anders - 17.01.04, 09:05

I have tried to download a firmware from creative. However, I cannot load a new firmware into it. PC cannot detect with Mp 3 at this moment.
Perry - 17.01.04, 15:15

I had the same problem initially with the European site, but it worked immediately when I tried the US site (the web site also seemed to have a different structure and seemed as if the European site was perhaps out of date compared with the US one). When I got the firmware error I selected connect to PC, plugged in the lead (get PC link display on LCD) then ran the software from the web and all installed fine .... good luck
Mark - 17.01.04, 17:39

Hello! Mark,

Would you show me the web address ?
Perry - 17.01.04, 21:57

Hello. I want to get a MD and your way is very good. But 4G MD is too much for me. I am using D60 and i think D60 only support up to 2G (by FAT 16). So do you know can i get a 1.5G MD by a MuVo 1.5G MP3 player ? thanks a lots!
Wind - 17.01.04, 23:48

Perry, I think I just went to http://www.creative.com then selected "americas" from the pop down next to the world map.... then support, downloads and automatic update from the link within the text. I usually find the US sites are ahead of the UK, as well as US customers getting better prices! I should have made notes exactly what I did but was just so pleased when it worked. I also had to do it during my lunchbreak at work as I use a Mac at home. Main thing is don't panic if that doesn't work try a few different things., I don't think there is any way to damage anything.
Mark - 18.01.04, 01:09

Is it possible to use CF card to replace the 4G MD in MP3 player?

Thanks!
Tony (link) - 18.01.04, 07:53

Creative has big sales this week and 4GB is HK$2498 which is around US$320.
Tony (link) - 18.01.04, 13:57

Thanks! Mark,

I will try again.
Perry - 18.01.04, 17:02

Tony, do you mean it is sold in hk at price HK$2498? Where can i buy it at this price? Thx!
Tom - 18.01.04, 23:40

The selling exhibition had been stopped at that day.
Perry - 18.01.04, 23:58

Andy,

Someone tried the speed test and shows that 4GB MD is much slower than 1G MD and CF. Have you compare the write speed of your 4G MD?

Thanks!
Tony (link) - 19.01.04, 00:15

In the http://www.robgalbraith.com CF test in Kodak DCS14 the 4G was faster than the 1G, guess it depends what camera you are using.

Re: Firmware update, I had "accidentally" deleted the old firmware by selecting "update firmware" before I updated (gave an erasing firmware message), whether this makes a difference I don't know if you wanted to risk it .... I wasn't too worried, getting the drive was enough, getting a working MP3 player as well was a bonus. Firmware version I have now is 1.10.01. Checked my previous instructions for update by trying again and seemed o.k., unit was recognised, etc just didn't update again as I presumably still have the latest. Good luck to anyone else who wants to try.
Mark - 19.01.04, 18:50

Mark,

Are you using a CF card or MD to replace the 4G MD?

Thanks!
Tony (link) - 19.01.04, 19:18

Tony,
a 512M CF .... have 1 G microdrive which I may try later .... don't see why it shouldn't work if the 4G does UNLESS 512M and 4G work because there are Muvo's with both these capacities/technologies and the software is "hard-wired". I would think it (1G) would work however as the firmware update reported mine as a 4G unit despite having the 512M CF fitted. CF is more shock-proof than the mcirodrive so may stick with that (unless I find a cheap 1G MD).
Mark - 19.01.04, 19:30

I meant cheap 1G CF of course!
Mark - 19.01.04, 19:50

Hello! Mark,

Before you updating the firmware, have you try to format it ? What happen next ?

I have tried it and got "media error" message.

I cannot download a new firmware in it, as my PC cannot detect it after I connecting it togetherly.I have tried many times with different way. However, all were failed. I also tried CF256M or CF512M card too.

I think I should be gave up.
Perry - 19.01.04, 20:48

I seem to remember I did format it and think(!) it was o.k. I did get a consistent error message but can't remember exactly what it was. Seems maybe that the Muvo not being detected by the PC is perhaps the first error to fix. What I did this morning was connect Muvo to PC (link display appears on Muvo .... you will probably need to select connect to PC from the "error" options you get when all is not well, perhaps try with and without selecting the option) then use the Americas site. Check that the PC has seen the Muvo being connected perhaps before going to the site (I get an icon on the toolbar on Win2000 which you use to stop the unit before unplugging ..... if the PC doesn't see the Muvo at this stage then the software on the website won't either) (Are you using a version of windows which supports USB?, my Win2000@work and Mac at home both see it as a hard drive without any drivers. I'm pretty convinced it was using the americas site which seemed to make the real difference for me. I should have another unit to convert tomorrow will post better details on how I did it if it works again.
Mark - 19.01.04, 21:39

Just a thought ...... make sure the CF card is plugged in the correct way around ..... it would be very easy to get that wrong!
Mark - 19.01.04, 21:43

My OS of PC is Window ME. And I also try to download the firmware from America site. It is no differient to me. I am sure the side of CF card correct.

Is it different version between asia and america Creative 4G ?
Perry - 19.01.04, 23:16

Hello! Mark,

I had fixed the problem.

Creative mp3 cannot read all CF card. It is compatiable with some card only. As other DC.
Perry - 20.01.04, 14:55

Glad you got there Perry!
I repeated the process on a new Muvo today:
Follow removal of 4G as above diagrams
Fit replacement CF card
Power up and select format when media error occurs
Select connect to PC and then plug into PC (should give the PC link screen)
Go to http://www.creative.com
Select americas from creative website selection (next to world map)
Select downloads from support drop down
Select auto firmware update
That's it (my old FW was 1:00:02 new is 1:10:01)
Mark - 20.01.04, 16:55

Hello! Mark,

How many do you have Creative Mp3 ?

I find the price of it be cheaper and cheaper. May be Creative prepare to deal with iPod mini. I bought it at HK $3498. Now it is $2498 only. I don't know how Creative can make the profit.
Perry - 20.01.04, 19:51

Hi Perry,

Would you please let me know where can I get it at the price of HK$2498? million thx!
Tom - 20.01.04, 20:17

Creative Selling Exhibition last week!
(Body only)
(w FM remote, $2798!)

However, don't disappointed...

I saw there was $2798 in Broadway on that day.
Perry - 20.01.04, 20:28

Perry,

I also see Broadway selling HK$2798 with rgw FM remote today.. but i prefer to get the body only which can save me HK$300..
Tom - 20.01.04, 20:36

You can try to find it in Golden. I think they can give an option to you.
Perry - 20.01.04, 20:48

I bought 2, I'm in the UK and they cost me 229 pounds each (free postage). I wanted a couple of drives myself but will also try selling on ebay (UK only) for anyone who doesn't fancy doing the work themselves. I've put one on at 275 pounds! Not sure waht to do with any spare Muvo's I may get as yet .... see what happens with the microdrives first.
Mark - 20.01.04, 21:28

Hello! Mark,

Which brand of CF do you put in Muvo ?
And how about the capacitiy ?

All my CF cards was failed to be read in Muvo, except 1G card ?
Perry - 20.01.04, 22:16

I've only tried 2 Sandisk Ultra (not the latest Ultra or Ultra II which are faster) 512M cards. Haven't tried any other capacities yet or the 1G microdrive. Did you try formatting the card from the menu on the Muvo as I found this is what made it work for me when I did the second unit and got the media error?
Mark - 20.01.04, 22:39

Yes! I have format it in Muvo.

I find one thing. If the card can be formated in Muvo, then it can be used in it and download firmware will be OK.

I also try old Sandisk 192M. It is failed.
Perry - 20.01.04, 22:43

If you only find 512M cards work it could be the software "hard-wired" for 512M CF (X Trainer version) and 4G microdrive version! Or maybe 512M is the minimum ..... you did say about a 1G card working.
Mark - 20.01.04, 23:35

I also have two CF512 card. One is Transcend. Another one is EagleTec. All are not worked with Creative.

1G is OK only.
Perry - 20.01.04, 23:54

Has anyone tried this with the 1.10.3 firmware yet?
dave - 22.01.04, 08:39

Based on various comment, it seems it works for selected 512 CF card only.
Tony (link) - 22.01.04, 23:07

I've tested the 1GB Microdrive. It really works fine. Reformatted and instalalled the firmware again.

Greetings from Switzerland
Thomas
Thomas - 23.01.04, 05:02

I've got one coming tomorrow, fingers crossed it'll work with my 1GB PQI Card.
dave - 23.01.04, 07:15

update... 1GB PQI F1 card works fine. To install it I downloaded the 1.10.01 firmware from nomadworld. Flashed the player. Swapped the Cards. The repair screen appeared on boot. Selected the 'format all data' option. Next 'connect to PC' then flashed woth 1.10.01 firmware again. Works fine & the mp3 player reports the correct memory & free space sizes.

If anyone in the UK's interested the 4GB card's now on ebay (just wanted a 1GB solid state MP3 player & this seemed the cheapest way to do it!)
dave - 24.01.04, 04:36

alan - 26.01.04, 00:00

Up to now, only 512M CF and 1G MD works in the MP3 player. Any other size of CF can be used?
Tony (link) - 26.01.04, 20:25

Sandisk 128M or 256M is OK too!
Perry - 26.01.04, 22:45

The 4GB MD works on my Canon S45 :)

I tried two CF on the MuVo2, one is NCP 256MB, another one is Canon 32MB.

The NCP 256MB couldn't be regonized (neither format nor connect to PC), only "media error" showed up all the time.

Surprisingly, the Canon 32MB (that come with my S45) can be used, but the MuVo2 can only formatted it as 10.8MB. That's really strange!
Hugh - 26.01.04, 23:54

I just saw the following on a forum about PDAs, do you think this is just bluff to cover Hitachi against any warranty claims? or you think it might be true? I wouldn't want to destroy my PDA!!
Thanks for any info,
Sasco

"...offering bare 4GB Hitachi Microdrives that were actually removed from OEM equipment such as the Creative 4GB Muvo2, Samsung's 4GB YEPP or pre-release versions of Apple's mini-ipod. The version of the Hitachi 4GB Microdrive found in these OEM devices is NOT generic and these modified drives will NOT reliably work in most other CF based equipment despite the claims of these sellers. The reason for this is that many OEMs using Hitachi 4GB drives in their products are doing so with proprietary firmware written to their specialized OEM hardware implementation . In the case of Creative's Muvo2 product it not only has proprietary firmware, but it also uses a different CF connector pin out and operating voltage than the CF industry standard supports. Any unknowing buyer who purchases and uses one of these hybrid Muvo2/Hitachi 4G microdrives in their CF equipment for prolonged periods of time will destroy both the Hitachi 4GB drive and their CF based equipment. For other OEMs using proprietary firmware in their Hitachi 4Gb Microdrives, you will experience intermittent read/write problems if you use their hybrid 4GB Microdrive in other CF devices. If buying elsewhere on eBay, please be sure to ask the seller the origin of their 4GB Hitachi Microdrive before buying or you may be making a costly mistake! In contrast, all our Hitachi Microdrives are guaranteed fresh OEM product direct from Hitachi and have not been modified in any way from the Hitachi supplied specifications stated below...."
Sasco - 28.01.04, 04:42

Having re-read that snippet I think it is just a marketing blurb written to get people to buy from that company...I really hope so anyway!
Sasco - 28.01.04, 04:47

Obviously, it is a marketing blurb.
Andy - 28.01.04, 07:49

Recived today from Creative ($210 shipped). Ordered Saturday, 2-day delivery, arrived early :)

Had much-difficulty getting one of my 512Meg CF cards to work after pulling out the 4Gig.
Kingston 512: Cannot get to work at all, after many-attempts.
SansDisk 512: Eventually got to work, I DID have to update the firmware. Actually twice for some reason I had first flashed firware with 4Gig drive placed back inside. It complained after putting back in the SansDisk.
If you use the auto-update utility via Creatives website, and need to re-run firmware, it gets stored to:
"C:Program FilesCreativeSoftware UpdatecacheCreative NOMAD MuVo^2 (4.0 GB) Firmware Update version 1.10.01MuVo^2(4GB MD)_PCFW_US_1_10_01.exe"
Scott Stokes (link) - 28.01.04, 10:46

Can someone confirm whether the SanDisk 128MB or 256MB CF can be used with the MuVo2? If that works, I'll buy one for my MuVo2 to let it work.
Hugh - 28.01.04, 16:33

DSCM-340 microdrive can use in MUVO2, but DMDM-340 failed. Transcend 1G, HAGIWARA 256M, IODATA 128M, buffalo 48M also failed, but Lexar 512M successful. And format the 4GB MD in FAT32, cluster allocation 32K can make the writing speed faster, but FAT16, 64K can reach the most fast speed, almost equal to 30X CF.
woodman - 28.01.04, 17:48

some website like buy.com, sell for USD 194. Creative want to fight with apple
anders - 29.01.04, 10:12

Will it work on my Kodak (consumer base) digital camera. It accepts CF memory card and every time I plug it in on my PC, it will show up on Windows Explorer.

I will try one of these someday. I hope Hitachi wont modify it. I will probably go with PC base MP3 player because they are a lot cheaper than overhyped iPod mini. It seems a lot of them are coming out with the same drive, Rio Nitrus will have one too. Nitrus is cheap, I hope the 4GB version will also be cheap.

I received mine from Creative last night and I successfully removed the drive. It works great in my ASUS A620BT Pocket PC!

I tried a 512MB Simpletech CF card, and a 256MB Viking CF card in the MuVo2, and neither worked. I got the 'Media Error' when I tried to format them in the device. However, I'm going to try again since I see Andy got the same error. I hope the 512MB card works. Otherwise, I will probably try to find someone willing to buy the player who has a card to install themselves. I'd be happy to sell the player empty for $75.
Michael A - 30.01.04, 06:01

I have succeded with Lexar 256 MB 12x CF card, Lexar 256 MB 24x did not work.

Replaced card, formatted, updated firmware (to teh same version, in other words i updated again)

Rock 'n roll !

The Hitachi drive works fine in my Sony DSC-F828

to Michael A.-- what model # of Lexar 256mb do u use that work with this player thanx
wayne. - 09.02.04, 11:58

Just thought you should know that your trick has reached slickdeals.net and about a dozen other such sites. it seems that there are a few places left that still have the old version of the muvo2 for sale between $190 to $220 US.

The new version will have a hardwired version of the 4GB drive inside that is not removable.
Josh (link) - 09.02.04, 15:09

Any realiable source to get them, even if it's more expensive than Amazon or Dell?

Thanks
Bruno - 09.02.04, 20:42

Actually, wayne:

I wrote about the player not workign with my SimpleTech and Viking cards. Palmen wrote that he had success with Lexar.

I'm just happy the microdrive works in my Pocket PC. Perfect timing too because a new version of FPSCE was released and I can now play some Playstation games full speed. :-)
MichaelA - 10.02.04, 11:33

The Muvo2 4GB... how much does it cost in HK? i know singapore has dropped the price recently... HK too maybe?
someday - 16.02.04, 07:14

Sam, you can still use the mp3 player her cards. And 4GB is very good for taking movies and maybe RAW in a DC.
Someday. it is now at HK$2798 in HK.
Andy - 16.02.04, 09:20

Guys - about the "special-edition" of the microdrives - THERE ARE NO SPECIAL EDITION OF THE MICRODRIVES!

Don't belive the foolish rumours set out by disgruntled salesmen
they're just like some car-salesmen we already know...they'll do and say
anything for money.

Here's the reasons:
- The hitachi microdrives comes with a hitachi "advert" label wrapped
around it, if they made a special version for creative...why take
the extra trouble (and the extra expense) of sticking that
ad-label on the whole microdrive just
so it can be hidden inside a new product.

LOL!!!!

It's the EXACT same drive as the retail drive. Why on earth do you think
Creative put a CF-reader inside their muvo?
Because it's CHEAPER for them to buy CF-card memory for their MP3's than
it is for implementing their own memory cards.

Tommy (norway) - 20.02.04, 20:06

There might be some truth to the hacked 4gig MD by Hitachi. I cracked open my ipod mini today to reveal the drive. I put it in my HP ipaq, and it asked me to enter the name of the device driver for this card. Basically the card is not recognized. I then put it in my XP laptop with a CF to PCMCIA adaptor and nothing happens. No beep and it is not listed as a drive in My Computer. Here's the wierd part, if I put the Microdrive in a USB memory card reader then plug it into my laptop's USB port it shows up as a removable drive in My Computer. Maybe Hitachi changed something with the drives tht are in the ipod mini's. I read a few of you were able to use the hitachi drives that came out of your muvo and put it your pocketpc. Thats what Im trying to do, but no dice. Come on Engineering Majors time for a hack???
maestro - 23.02.04, 14:53

Can you format it?
Andy - 23.02.04, 19:58

Yes, i was able to format it in the USB memory card reader. It has fat32 on it. But it is still unrecognizable if I use it with a cf to pcmcia adaptor in my laptop, or if I use it in my pocket pc. Any ideas?

Hiya folks...

I'm having a serious problem with a Hitachi microdrive that i bought from ebay. i have a nikon d100 camera, and another 4gb hitachi microdrive. they work great together. however i recently bought another 4gb hitachi microdrive and no matter what i do, it still shows only 2gb on the card. i went and purchased a usb reader/writer and did a direct format from my pc, and still only 2gb. i dont know what else to do. i heard that i may need to do a low level format on the microdrive. i looked many places on the net and couldn't find software that would do it. i have two questions for you knowledgeable gurus out there,
1. how come this particular drive only shows me 2gb, inspite of the fact that it says 4gb on the outside (by the way, when i connect it with the usb reader/writer to my pc, it also shows 2gb)
2. how do i go about fixing the problem.

if you can email me i would be indebted to you eternally, thanks again.
alex - 29.02.04, 04:30

Alex - I am not a 'camera' person - I am 'Pocket PC' - but I have read a lot of posts recently trying to get this 4gb card to work. Some ideas I found/read.
Some older cameras will only reccognize 2gb - sad, but no workaround.
Some cameras do better with format of Fat16(or just Fat) instead of the newer Fat32. I assume you are using a card reader on the pc not just the camera sync cable. Its hard to get Win XP to do Fat 16 unless the card/HD/whatever is already at Fat16. Use a pc with an older OS.
The card reader looks like another drive to the pc. Right click and chose format.
If you don't check the 'quick format' box you get the lower lever formatting.
I finally got the 4gb card to work on my PPC by formatting fat16 on another machine and got the other card to work in the player by using a pc with Win Me.
Hope soe of this helps...
Ron...
ronald hurst - 29.02.04, 21:43

Ronald, is it possible for me to put fat 16 on the 4gb card if it is already formatted with fat32? I think it is impossible to change this unless I make this a bootable disk in my laptop and write zeros to it. But how do I make this a bootable disk when dos wont recognize USB card readers or PCMCIA slots? Unfortunately there is no way that I know of to change the fat while the card is in a windows enviroment. Is it possible for this disk to be seen in DOS? Thanks

sergio oliveira - 05.03.04, 22:42

Is it possible to put a 256 or 512MB CF unit in the MuVo2 after you remove the 4GB unit? If so, do you need to save the contents of the MicroDrive and then copy it to the memory card? Or will the MuVo2 just format the new memory card?

Cheers! http://woodwardcc.com
Matt - 06.03.04, 11:34

No need to copy, just format. But not all cards can work well with the player.
Andy - 06.03.04, 16:46

FAT16 is upto 2gb
FAT32 is above 2gb (don't remember the limit)
So if you format with FAT16 it will turn the card into a 2gb.

I don't know if this is helpful, but if anybody wants to buy a muvo2 4G, maybe you can try http://www.jandr.com. It keeps saying the item is out of stock, but I ordered last Friday and it's shipped today. The price is not bad, $199.99.

Hi,

has the Muvo 4Gb a hardwired version of the Microdrive inside that is not removeable ????
Roman - 25.03.04, 02:21

Ok, I've got the situation of receiving a Muvo2 shell with 1.11.01 preloaded. It seems this unit doesn't want to recognize any of the 4 cards I've tried. Sandisk 32mb, 64mb, Canon 32mb, Lexar x12 256mb all give me a "Media Error" regardless for any of the recovery mode options. I'm getting suspicious that 1.11.01 introduced a block to not recognize non authorized CF cards. Problem is since I get a media error I can't do firmware download from my PC.
Any ideas?
Karl - 25.03.04, 10:18

I will get it this Friday, hopefully. Will let you know if it's removable. Anyways, for an mp3 player only, Muvo2 is already cute enough. :)

Just bought one unit yesterday, swapped the microdrive with SanDisk 128 MB.

The microdrive works flawlessly in my Nikon D70, almost the same speed as the SanDisk 128MB.

Flashed the new FW for the player (version 1.11.01), so far so good, but it only recognized the memory as 107MB instead of 128MB. Any idea why?
Johan - 25.03.04, 17:38

Swapped the microdive of my german player with a SanDisk Ultra 256 MB and it works, also the Auto-Update via the german Creative Site.
My Pocket PC IPaq 2210 recognized 4 GB, my Casio Digicam QV4000 only 2GB.
Juergen - 26.03.04, 00:45

I would like to know the Hitachi part number of the 4 GB microdrive that is taken from the Muvo2. Does it have exactly the same one as listed on the Hitachi Storage Group website? All replies most welcome.

Slick - 27.03.04, 06:01

@ Alan: What part number do you mean ? on this site: http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/micro/mi..
I only found a model number, and it is exactly the same on my MD.
Juergen - 27.03.04, 23:16

Got my Muvo^2 from JandR.com on Friday, @ $199.99. The 4G microdrive works just fine with my digital rebel. At the beginning it says something like media error, after formatting it, rebel can recognize 3.8G. The read and write speed is obviously better than my simpletech 512 compact flash type I.

But I have problems to make the muvo work with my simpletech CF card. Sometimes it seems to work with Canon CF card, at least it connects to a PC. But with simpletech, it keeps giving media error, so the FW can't be instored at all. I read "reborn" artiles but still it still doesn't work for me. Anybody has any suggestions? Thanx.
Qahwah - 28.03.04, 00:49

Juergen: Yes thats the model number HMS360404D5CF00. My firmware revision is 1.10.01 as supplied new. Do I need to update the firmware before I remove the 4 GB microdrive? You see I would like to try a Transcend 30X 512 MB CF card or a Lexar 40X 512 MB CF card. The audio aspect is quite good and I don't want to be left with an empty shell.
Alan - 28.03.04, 01:34

@ Alan: No, you don't have to update before swapping the MD to a CF. In my case, when I tried older 340 MB and 1GB Microdrives, the Muvo was unable to receive power, the Display did not show the loading icon as described in the manual. If the muvo takes the power, you have a working card. Now the rest is easy, just follow the instructions on this site. If the auto-update does not work, load the firmware by hand and flash the muvo.
Juergen - 28.03.04, 14:38

@Juergen: How to load the firmware by hand? The muvo is turned on, but found media error. When it's connected to a PC, it's not being found by the computer, hence the firmware update can't go on. :(

Thanks.
Qahwah - 28.03.04, 17:44

@Qahwah (where are you from, I mean, the origin of your name):
go to http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/dr.. d=586&drivertype=4
and download the file. Its vital, that it is exactly the file for the Muvo² with 4 GB, as you can see in the filename. Store it and take the muvo, that shows media error. Now things came from my mind, you need a little bit fantasy ;-)
On the Muvo Disply should be the Recovery Mode v1.00, you can toggle to the right with the "joystick". There is a point "reload firmware", choose it, the display will show something, but no big reaction. Now "connect to PC" and hurry up to plug in your USB-Cable. On the Display should now be a picture showing the USB-Sign on the left, a cable and a Muvo on the right. Also, on your PC should be a new Disk, that you can open, with a folder called "Play List". If you have all that, you are connected. Now doubleclick the downloaded file and and box appears, telling you what happens, hopefully dating up the firmware.
Sorry guys, many "should", but thats all I have for you. Good luck to everybody.
Qahwah, please write a short note about the outcome.
Juergen - 28.03.04, 19:38

Sorry, forgot something. The software from the Muvo² included CD MUST be installed, otherwise there is no connection !
juergen - 28.03.04, 19:41

Qahwah, you said on the 25th that you ordered last friday & it's shipped today you mean wednesday the 24th not thursday 25th and then on another post you said received my order on friday the 26th.So my question did they overnight your order as a good gesture or did you have to pay for overnight shipping?
ace - 28.03.04, 23:29

Juergen: I have inserted a 512 MB Lexar 40X CF card and the Muvo2 has powered up inthe recovery mode. Now this where I am a little confused. Do I format the card (menu option 3) or reload the firmware (menu option4)?
Alan - 29.03.04, 00:05

to Alan: Sorry about the confusion, I ordered muvo2 from jandr.com on Mar 19, 2004 and got it on Mar 26, 2004. Meanwhile, the jandr.com website keeps saying the item is out of stock. It's kinda tricky, I don't know why. :)
Qahwah - 29.03.04, 01:29

to juergen: Thanks a lot for all the details. Actually when I first tried my canon CF card, the trick of connecting USB works, but still something went wrong after updating the firmware. And after that, seems the muvo refuses to be recognized by my computer, I have tried all my CF cards, sandisk, simpletech and canon again. I hope there is something we can do like what we did with the motherboard to clear the passwd. :)

One more question, how to connect the CF card with Muvo2? It might sound stupid, but which side one is the 1st pin? Thanks.
Qahwah - 29.03.04, 02:10

@Qahwah: Format: Not shure, maybe it depends on how the card was formatted before, FAT 16 or FAT 32. But formatting can't be wrong. BTW, on the address I have postet about the Partnumber for Alan, the is also a "FAT-Guide".
Lost connection: No real idea, try "reload firmware", for me it seems that this is something equal to the password clearing of a motherboard.
Connect the card: Look at the third picture on this site, the card should be inserted "front down", I mean, when the Muvo² is on the table like in the picture, must must see the backside of card before inserting.
Juergen - 29.03.04, 02:25

@ Juergen: I guess I would let it cool down for sometime. Sometimes when it's started, the menu is quickly loaded, sometimes it shows Muvo2 for a long time before what I call the menu else shows up. I guess it depends on luck. :) Thanks.
qahwah - 29.03.04, 02:54

Hi,
this is my first post here. I just bought the MuVo2 4gb on eBay and it is enroute. Several of you have mentioned that the new units are soldered.

Now I'm worried. Has anyone confirmed this, or am I being concerned over nothing...? The units are almost impossible to find. WalMart is "sold out", and CompUSA didn't even know what I was talking about.

If I had to guess, I would say that the unit is not in stock because Creative is reconfiguring the new drive units so that it is soldered to the board.

Has ANYONE received a 4gb unit that is soldered to the board?

Thanks.
David.
Dave_H (link) - 31.03.04, 03:09

David: This is just a rumor. These microdrives will not withstand the heat of a soldering iron. If Creative were to do this then I am sure Hitachi Storage Group would void any warantees.

Alan

Hi
New to this forum , my muvo 2 arrived last week , the Hitachi drives are not soldered. popped out fine , in my 300d now , the only cf card i could get to work in the muvo , is a sandisk 256mb.
had no probs with it at all ,did format of cf card in muvo , loaded firmware , perfect. I loaded the latest firmware before i dismantled the muvo 2.

maninasuitcase - 31.03.04, 06:03

Hi Maninasuitcase: Did you use a standard Sandisk 256 MB card or was it an Utra or Ultra II type?

Alan
Alan - 31.03.04, 14:52

Well I dunno - followed all the above and bought a Sandisk Ultra II 256mb card. Just installed and in contrast to the Toshiba 512mb and Integral 128Mb it does seem to be more responsive but still stuck on Media Error for all functions. Will turn card face up next session with screwdriver but really think this pot luck game is wearing a bit thin. Again anyone in London or SE England to compare notes with and get a second opinion on?? Technology hmmmm
Mark Hanna - 01.04.04, 00:34

Mark Hanna: Check and see if your Sandisk Ultra II 256 MB card is still ok. If its partition has been disabled as active then your card is no longer usable in a digital camera. this happened to my Lexar Pro 512 MB card!
By the way I am located in Somerset.
Alan - 01.04.04, 01:50

To Andy and Everybody: I think the solution lies inside the Muvo2 X Trainer in the form of a 512 MB compact flash card. It would be very interesting to compare it with the the Muvo2 4 GB. Any replies would be most welcome.
Alan - 01.04.04, 01:59

hi alan
sorry about the delay , i used an ordinary sandisk 256mb cf card , worked a treat first time
maninasuitcase - 01.04.04, 02:04

I do not know, but I am getting media errors always for the following:

Sandisk 1GB, Sandisk 256MB, Lexar(x40) 256MB, DaneElec 128MB...

I am going mad with frustration, anybody got ideas why the Sandisk 256 is not working?
Ominux - 04.04.04, 06:53

Ominux - I sympathise... As per Alans suggestion above, I took the Sandisk Ultra II 256 MB card out of the Muvo and tried it in my Coolpix 4300 - works fine so card not corrupted. Formatted the card on the computer and put it back in face up - again more resonsive bur still all MEDIA ERROR stuff and cant connect to the PC as it doesnt register on the desktop and the Muvo is unwilling anyway. In all of the above however Ive seen no mention of operating system - Im on Windows XP Pro - any one else similar whos had success? Ive got one or two leads locally but will be mailing round local computer companies to see if anyone in this area (East Sussex / Kent) can help.
Mark J Hanna - 04.04.04, 23:46

Well, I am at the end of the road with this thing... I tried Sandisk UltraII 512mb, and it stupefied me... I guess all I have now is a very bad paperweight (as its very light)... It seems that I may have damaged the unit or something,,, People out there, know this, the fragility of upgrading the firmware is extreme (in my opinion), and you must have the battery plugged in even if you the unit is connected to the A/C adapter to complete the upgrade...
Ominux - 06.04.04, 01:53

Hi all, I would like to know too as to what type of compact flash this muvo2 take, after getting one at ebay like many people have. ive try so different types but no luck yet... once i get my other flash card's ive ordered i'll post back as to if ive found the one that works
James D - 06.04.04, 02:36

I got mine from Dell today, the 4gb MD works in my iPaq. However, I just can't get a link between the player and the computer...hmmm...
tungbh - 07.04.04, 14:47

@Juergen: Sorry I missed your questions, I don't know why and how. Anyways, Qahwah is the Arabic word for coffee, I thought it was a Jamaican word, but I have no relationship with either of these. :)

One big mistake about the URL of the J&R website, http://www.jr.com, I bet everybody else knows it better than me. :)
Qahwah - 07.04.04, 15:04

All works perfectly. 4GB on Nikon D70 and 256 sandisk CF on muvo2.
Tekena - 07.04.04, 15:38

Ok, I got my MuVo2 (ordered on eBay) and it was not soldered. Obviously they are saying this as a ploy to stop the removal of the drive. Of course, they may make some kind of change in the future...

I am now trying to install a 128 mb flash card, but I am getting the dreaded Media Failure. It happens with 3 different card manufacturers (Lexar, Viking, and Mr.Flash). I have a Sandisk at home, and will try that tonight. From what I am reading, it looks like the best bet is a standard Sandisk of any size. I'll let you know how my install goes.

Other than that, the Hitachi is working perfectly in my Canon EOS 10d. In fact, the camera recognized it as an unformatted 3.8Gb drive, and handled the formatting for me with no problems.

--Dave.
David_H (link) - 08.04.04, 03:53

Received the Muvo2 from Dell last week.

Popped out the Hitachi Microdrive 4GB after removing all 4 screws outside and 4 screws inside. Inserted into Canon S50 with no problem. Recognized as 3.8GB, formatted and worked fine. I can now take about 1569 HQ pictures.

Inserted Sandisk 512MB CF into Muvo2 and reformat the CF. No problem at all.
Tranferred about 200 WMa files to it.

I am very happy with it.
AndyLee - 08.04.04, 04:31

just ordered a muvo.... should be here next week. thanks for all of the info guys!!
abel (link) - 08.04.04, 22:01

Ok, I installed the Sandisk 128 and it works fine. It looks to me like the Sandisk's are the best way to go in order to insure that you will have a smooth replacement process.

FYI, the Firmware Update software name has changed. It is now the following:

MuVo^2(4GB_uHDD)PCFW_US_1_11_01.exe

You can find it at Creative's Asia site. I couldnt find it on their U.S. site. The URL is:

http://asia.creative.com/scripts/downloa.. thers/7536/MuVo^2(4GB_uHDD)PCFW_US_1_11_01.exe

Just click on "I Agree" and the download will begin.

Juergen: How's the battery life in your iPaq 2210 with the microdrive?
Nela - 10.04.04, 05:08

Well what can I say but "help" ow please... ive tried the new and old type of the 256mb sandisk (not utlra's) and both give the same well knowen media error. if any could please give me a detail spec of there working CF cards in there muvo2 (4GB) and how to get a connection to the computer via USB, most of it is due to the CF not compatible but come on im now trying sandisk's with out any joy at all... if you can help please contact me at nomad.muvo2@ntlworld.com
James - 12.04.04, 06:05

What's holding it in? I have the 4 exterior screws out, and two smaller yet black screws and one even smaller silver screw from the left is out. Still, though, the only way to even see the MD is to push and bend the PCB via the control switch on the outside. This does not seem like the proper method to get at it. Is there another screw hidden somewhere? Do I need to lift the black tape on the right hand side where it appears to be held down? Is there yet another screw below that?

Also, all this talk of firmware version -- how do I see what version I have? Any why are many folks downflashing to 1.10.01 from vers 1.11?

Thanks!

Is the 4GB CF in Creative Nomad 4GB MuVo2 also compatible with Canon S400?

It would be nice if it is.

Thanks,
TC - 13.04.04, 21:52

Any responses about this working with an S400, Slick deals, http://www.slickdeals.net/#p4511, has Creative Labs Nomad Muvo2 4GB MP3 Player in stock for $200 - 10% off coupon TDAW2SAVETEN = $180 + shipping. Search for B0001BXCFS to find it.

It's out of stock everywhere else. If you open it up, there is a Hitachi 4GB Microdrive inside it.

I hope this works. Please let me know if anyone had had any luck with it.
Tony - 13.04.04, 23:52

@Nela: Sorry, did not test battery life, just looked if 2 or 4 Gb are recognized. I'm in my PPC-Club on thursday and will play around with the card and several PPC, i will tell you the outcome.
Juergen - 13.04.04, 23:56

S400 will not work. S400 takes Compact Flash type 1 (thin type). Microdrive is CF type 2 (little bit thicker; electrically compatible, just physically won't fit.)
rico - 14.04.04, 01:46

Has anyone tried the Hitachi drive on a Dimage A1 or A2? Also, thanks to all those that have posted their experiences here. I've got one on order, I'll post whether it works or not.

Also, is anyone compiling a list of what CF will work in the player? I've read the whole stream and I see that Sandisk does best - I was just wondering if anyone has made a compiled list of what does and doesn't work.

Thanks.

I got that slick deals deal, definetly worth it cause WOO its 4GB! Someone needs to hook two of these up together and put them in one mp3 player!

LARRY,
Did you use a newer or older version of the SanDisk 128mb CF card? And was it a regular one or an Ultra one?

Just curious because I have an older 128mb SanDisk CF card that did NOT work, no matter what I tried...

:(
L - 18.04.04, 12:13

Alright guys, I was directed to this log off of slickdeals and from reading the posts, this is my story.

I bought the player off ebay without the 4gb HD for about 40 dollars shipping included, Waited a couple of days for the thing to arrive and bought a Sandisk 256 CF at frys and opened it up and popped the flash drive in and it went into "Recovery Mode v1.00"
I plugged in the usb connector to the player and my pc and my pc recognized it (i'm using xp) as a usb storage device and started popping songs in. after I rebooted it, it gave me a incorrect firmware error so I unplugged the usb connector, (here is where the key part is) went to http://www.nomadworld.com and under downloads found the nomad 4.0 firmware update version and downloaded it.
When you execute the file it will ask you to connect your player. I connected it again and the software will ask you to update the firmware and that's it. I'm listening to it right now. I want to thank you all for your posts and for all the experimenting to land me this mp3 player for about 100 bucks. ^_^ Good luck everybody and thanks to that person who posted not to panic, it helped.
Steve - 18.04.04, 18:22

starstreak - 19.04.04, 14:57

Just got mine from Buy.com (ordered on April 7) and no soldering. HOAX! Don't even worry about it. Just worry if it'll ever ship!!! LOL.
xyz - 20.04.04, 15:52

Ok well I got my muvo torn apart put a scandisk..ultra2 card in it..
I cannot stress enough that you need to load the old bios first before starting the upgrade operation..and also when selecting operations select on the muvo pcconnect first that will get it talking to the pc when you come up in its boot mode ..have the firnware ready to reload to...
NOW this is what I have ..
I have a Dimage A2 yes its the newer one and at first I could not get the 4gb card to work..so I looked around ..
and this is what I found ..the 4gb card has HIDDEN PARTITIONS....which makes it look unuseable to the dimage A2...
So i used the following proceedure to remove and clean the 4gb card and it worked :) i am just pasting this here from anothe site so bear with me..it goes..
Formatting the MD
-------------------------

You need disk partitioning tools to format the MD as the A1 cannot use it until it is properly prepared. The MuVo has hidden non-standard partitions that make the A1 think it is unusable.

1) Download the 7Tools Partition Manager demo at: http://download.com.com/3000-2248-102626..

2) Plug the MD into a USB reader and start the software. You must remove all of the partitions on the MD except for the main partition (it won't let you anyway).

3) Change the main partition to use all of the available clusters on the MD.

4) Format the MD using FAT32. I used the default sector size, but plan to experiment with size to see if it affects speed.

That's it! Plug the MD into your A1 and it should be ready to fly!

The cost was $245.00 US dollars. International Orders will be charged a Ten Dollar Handling Fee. In addition, International Customers may be required to provide additional information to assist us in preventing fraud.

Thanks for yur advice
Rune - 26.04.04, 23:08

I have tried lots of different cards (8MB sandisk,16MB maxell, 128 fuji and 512 ncp) none of them worked, same error message "media error".
Anyone got some suggestions?
Erik - 27.04.04, 02:49

Got my Muvo2 4gb yesterday and dismantled it (some of the screws, when it arrived, were stripped) lucky me....
Finally got it open and removed the card. WAS NOT SOLDERED IN!!
Placed it in my Canon EOS Digital and formated the card. Works GREAT!! No other issues with it in the camera or formatting it. I just let the camera use it's own firmware to format it.
Thanks!!
BTY: http://www.spacecentersystems.com/catalo.. Still has them instock. They sold out of the original 43 I posted about, but they got some more stock back in!!

If I format with my camera it seems to format then the camera shuts down by itself. When I turn it back it tells me the card is out of room. Anybody?
Steve - 05.05.04, 01:19

hi everbody...

i was wondering will the Hitachi 4 GB work on Memplug sleeve wih Ipaq 5450.

Will the Muvo 2 work with Integral 256 ?? must it be a Sandisk ??

What is the original format of the Muvo 2 when it first came out of the box ?? FAT16 ??

another important question.. the picture andy provide shows that Muvo2 has totally silverish case but the one that i see now on websites are Silver with black covers. Does that mean its the new version ?? Does that mean the microdrive cannot be extracted ??

thanks
Sam - 05.05.04, 18:29

Hitachi microdrive works like a nomral microdrive or CF card. Tested with nikon d70, canon 10D, casipea palm, such an usb device on computer, canon G2....
Muvo player can support normal CF higger than 32 MB becouse need load firmware in CF
works perfectly if you take care in operations.

This is my second muvo2 that won't boot up. I can hear the drive spinning, but no display. Does anybody know how to fix this?

The 4gb microdrive works fine in my Canon G3.
Just received my MuVo May 6 2004 from Amazon, no problem removing the microdrive.
Craig - 07.05.04, 09:12

I posted yesterday. I bought a Kingston 512 CF card and installed it into the MuVo. Of corse it did not work giving an error message. I could connect it to my Mac OS 10.3 computer and if I selected Clean Files from the menu it would mount. I loaded some MP3 files onto the MuVo but still not go. I used a PC with XP home and used the downloaded 1.10.1 FW update (from the link above) but could not detect the device. I loaded the MuVo software and tried again and finally got the software to see the MuVo, ran the FW update and it indicated that 1.11.01 was newer, did I still want to update. You bet I did and It now works just fine.

hi craig,
your post does give hope to a lot frustrated muvo owners...
but i seem to be too dumb to follow ur procedure (keep getting media error on muvo for EVERY menue choice + player not connected on pc), so forgive me for asking for an idiotproof advice:

can i use ur clean files procedure without a mac? how can i get it to mount and detected by pc?
is using a mac to erase it the key??
cant really believe that.

I bought an empty MUVO2 and I tried installing a Simpletech 256MB CF but it did not work. Then I tried a Sandisk 1GB CF card. Works just fine.
If you are planning on reusing the empty MUVO2, I recommend using only SanDisk CF cards.

ben - 12.05.04, 01:31

David..

can you describe your steps in more details ??

did you downgrade your muvo 2 to 1.10.01 before you remove the MD ??

had you check the upper circuit board is connected firmly to the MD shield plate ??

Did you insert the CF card wrong way around ??
Sam - 12.05.04, 03:01

Hi Sam, Thanks for getting back to me. I purchased a shell from ebay so I am not sure how the drive was removed. So far, all I have done is inserted the cf card and tried to connect to the computer. I put the cf card facing down since that is the way the hitachi drive appeared to be. The drive is firmly connect to the plate so I'm not sure if that is the problem. I will double check to see if I nserted the cf card the wrong way. Any suggestions If this doesnt work?? Thanks again for trying to help out. It is greatly appreciated.
David - 12.05.04, 03:11

David

Check the connectors at each end on the small ribbon cable between the two printed circuit boards. Make sure that they are seated correct.

Alan
Alan - 12.05.04, 03:36

Alan, thanks so much for your suggestion. Once I have the unit in front of me, I will post and let you know if that works. I really appreciate your help. Thanks.
David - 12.05.04, 03:38

David..

notice at the place where there is a black tape covering one screw..look near there and you will see a sort of rectangular DIL connector. Intuitively, you will know that its connected somewhere..and it is connected to your upper circuit board. So make sure both of the are exactly aligned.

the screw beneath the balck tape is also vital. make sure you have all the black screws down(but not too tight). one way to test whether is it good enough is to try pressing the players button. if every function 'clicks' comfortably, then it should be alright.

i find that sometimes the player will stay at 'Recovery Mode 1.00' and never response. Thats is due to some lose connection between the buttons to the circuit board ( DIL connectors ). Mine did too, i was aware of that and press and held the player hard together for the whole process.

Sometimes it just lags before it response, so press the 'menu' few more times.

the correct order should be :

1) Reload firmware 1.10.01 before you do anything ( including removing the MD ).
2) then remove the MD and replace your CF.
3)then after putting everything together, 'Format All'.
4) then it should display how much has been formatted ( mine says 468 mb ).
5) then it will go into recovery 1.00 again.
6) bring the menu up again, select 'Reload Firmware' then select 'Tick' (DO NOT CONNECT YOUR MUVO 2 with USB yet) and it will says 'Erasing Firmware'.
7)Then it will promtp you to connect the muvo 2 to the pc, only at this point, you connect the player to the pc and run the firmware once more.
8) then it shoul dbe fine !!

in fact, mine was fine even without loading the firmware for the last time. But just to be complete and secure a bug free operation. Just do it !! after all it will not harm anything.

hope this helps

I've just bought a MoVu2 with 1.5GB microdrive. I have already dis-assembled the unit to the last screw (even the microdrive itself) but the drive controller is hard wired to the unit in a non-standard interface. Is there any other MP3 player that can do the job?
Mushrigh - 12.05.04, 18:43

Great idea!
I'm thinking of ordering the muvo, and use the 4gb in my Ixus 430. HAVE ANYONE TRIED THIS?
Could anyone PLEASE type an order of how you do this, I must say I'm a bit confused. You must DOWNgrade the muvo first??? What does that mean?
Any help are greatly appreciated.
Ixus 430 - 13.05.04, 01:36

Mushrigh... You ordered the wrong one. It's the MuVo^4 4GB player NOT the MuVo^2 1.5GB.
robotZER0 - 13.05.04, 09:36

Sam and Alan, Thanks very much for helping me out. Its always nice to know that people are willing to help someone else out. I am very happy to say that the player is now up and running. The sandisk 512 cf works perfectly. It only formatted to 468MB but I will have to live with that. Thanks again!!

David
David - 14.05.04, 02:30

Hi David..

no problem...
glad you finally made it...

i was just wondering..which version of Sandisk CF are you using ??

can i have the part number ??

so whats the problem before that ?? what fixes your problem ??

thanks
Sam - 14.05.04, 05:39

HI David..

just to make it clearer..

does your 512 Sandisk has the part no of

SDCFB-512-A10

or

SDCFB-512-768

if you are not sure about that, then does the card has 'Compact Flash' the the side of the card of beneath the '512' word ??

hope i did not confuse things instead
thanks

Got a shell from ebay and I don't even know which firmware is installed. I tried with 3 cards and nothing but "media error".

I used linux to analyse each card and this is the result:
--------------------------
Label: Canon FC-16M
Devide ID: Lexar ATA Flash
31808 Sectors (16MB)
CHS=497/2/32
--------------------------
Label: Pretec 128MB
Device ID: 128MB CHH
250368 Sectors (128MB)
CHS=978/8/32
--------------------------
Label: 128MB PNY
Device ID: Toshiba THNCF128MBA
250368 Sectors
CHS=978/8/32
--------------------------

Can someone post similar data for other cards (working or non working)?

Needless to say I'm stuck can't downgrade, computer doesn't sees it, etc.
Fernando - 15.05.04, 09:05

I'm not having much luck also. I tried the SanDisk SDCFB-256 and Canon FC-16M. Nothing works. I'm getting "Media Error" no matter which option I choose. And when it is in Recovery Mode, XP doesn't recognize it when I plug in the USB cable. Could it be Creative did something to prevent other CF from being used?
Joe - 15.05.04, 10:40

That's very expensive in HK, you can buy a Creative Nomad 4GB MuVo2 here in the U.S. for $200, that's about $1550 HKD.
Kenny - 16.05.04, 04:01

Mark, Have you used the drive with your Cannon EOS 300D yet? Any caveats? How does it effect the speed?
TIA
BilL - 16.05.04, 21:27

I bought a NOmad Muvo2 DAP-MD00001 on May 16th,2004. The MD looks just like the one in the pictures. I followed the instructions that were posted. Not only does the CF not work in the player, but the MD has problems too. I formatted the MD in my computer to FAT32, but when I put it in my Canon 10D, I get Error 2. I can't even open the menu to format the card. The access light doesn't even turn on.
When I put it in my PDA (Zaurus 760), the CF icon shows so I know it's in there, but it doesnt show up in the browser.
I hope I can at least get the muvo to work with the MD in it again.
scott - 16.05.04, 21:50

I found on a Japanese site that Creative has actually redesigned some of their models so that the microdrive WILL NOT work on other devices. The packages are different so you will be able to tell the difference.
The page of this link is in Japanese but you can look at the pictures of packages. The one on the left is the old version that can be used in other devices. The one on the right is the package that I have and the one that will not work. The author of this page also did tested them both and got the same conclusion. BEWARE.

scott - 16.05.04, 22:28

I have the one on the right and i've got him working.
Wouter (link) - 17.05.04, 04:55

I put the MD back into the player and the player doesn't work any more. Doesn't format, nothing. Wouter, what did you do to get it working? Or did it just work by following the instructions already posted?
Scott - 17.05.04, 06:56

I went to a shop that had a bunch of the same MDs for sale. They were selling them for $250. I tried a few of them in my Zaurus and got the same results as mine. It seems a bunch of other people had the same problem as me and the shop wasn't yet aware that the cards had been modified. They only check them on their PCs and since they work fine on the PC, they buy them. I asked how much they were buying them for. They said $190 so I sold mine and found a used 2.2gig for $150 that works on my Zaurus and 10D. End of Story.
Scott - 17.05.04, 20:00

Anyone get this to work with the IBM Mrand 1Gb Microdrive? I tried with no luck. I have the same problem Perry had. Can not get my PC to recognize the unit.
Stuart - 20.05.04, 21:35

When I first installed the 1GB IBM MicroDrive, I installed it upside down. I have since reinstalled it right side up and i can boot and get to the Recover menu but can not connect to my PC. Will installing the drive upside down hurt? Also, I formatted my MicroDrive to FAT 16 in m PC before installing it into the Muvo. Does it need to be formatted to FAT32? I have a 1GB SanDisk and it does not work either. I also tried a 256MB Kingston and a 1GB Kingston. I even tried a 2GB Hitachi MD and that did not work. When I say does not work, I can not get the Muvo to be recognized by my PC. BTW, I noticed that if I just let the Muvo power up by itself, I get a Media Error no matter which buttons I press. If I pull the battery and hold down the menu button while reinserting the battery, the Recover Menu comes up much faster and I can actually start to format but it ends in an error. I can also Reload Firmware, but that ends in a media error as well. BTW, you can also press reboot and then hold down the menu key to get the same response.
Stuart - 21.05.04, 04:56

I can confirm one thing, the Muvo is a very fussy beast! I tried all three of my Compact Flash cards, 2 x 256 and 1 x 512mb various manufactuers, not one of them would work even after formatting and cursing!. Eventually I bit the bullet and bought a Sandisk 512Mb (SDCFB-512-E10). This card worked first time no problem at all, although the Muvo wanted a flash update afterwards. It works perfectly now.
Brian - 21.05.04, 23:25

Brian, thanks for the response. I am getting a 512MB SanDisk on Tuesday. Not sure what the part number is.
Stuart - 22.05.04, 05:39

I tried to replace my MD with CF, it gives me media error. I've already updated the latest FW before I remove my MD. Can anyone help me solve this problem?

Hello,
I’ve got serious problems with 4 GB Muvo and need help (I have already read the complete thread and could not solve it).
Here is the story (in all detail):
I bought the Muvo without Microdrive on Ebay. I do not know if the firmware was already up or downgraded. So I want to take a normal 512 Sandisk CF type 1 (but industrial grade). I have got little problems because I did not know where to put. So I opened the first the case unscrewing the first 4 screws. Unfortunately I plugged out the CF connector to the motherboard (this should be not the problem because I put it back, isn’t it ?). Then I saw the other four screws, and put the CF card to the right place, put the screws pack and prayed. The well known “media error” message occurred. I googled a little bit and found the information about the firmware downgrade. So I downloaded the “(MuVo^2(4GB MD)_PCFW_US_1_10_01.exe” file (I tried also Creative_MuVo 2_4.0gb_1.10.01.exe) from a Chinese or Japanese page. I started the firmware update on my Muvo, connected it to the USB port of my WIN2000 desktop and started the exe file. Everything looks fine, the muvo shows a valid connected and the process bar of the update application proceeded. Now the strange behaviour: The process bar showed 100% but there was no “complete” or “finish” messages and all visible buttons were disabled. I waited several minutes and I had to kill the process on my desktop. I repeated that procedure several time without luck. The behaviour of the muvo afterwards was the same -> “Media Error”. I thought this is problem of my CF card and the update will work if I use another one. So I rent a normal 512 MB Sandisk and 512 MB Sandisk Ultra II and tried it with those cards. The result was the same with one exception: I was not able to connect the muvo to my desktop via USB anymore (the same “media error” message occurs selecting the firmware update on the muvo). Also not if I plugged in the industrial grade Sandisk, it worked before.
I am really despaired and hope for some useful advices.
What are the reasons for the connection problem, I read also several times in this thread?
regards Haefy

Bummer, just cancelled my order!!

Dear Customer,
We apologize for the delay in your order. Creative has made a slight change in their Nomad Muvo MP3 player. The original part number was CLB70PD523000 and has been discontinued. The new part number is CLB70PD523014. The only difference is that the old unit the 4GB drive was removable and the new one is not. We will be starting to receive them in stock on Friday. Please let us know if you would still like your order with the new part number.
Thank you,
Customer Service

Ant - 07.06.04, 22:11

Wouter mentioned that he go the new MUVO drive to work outside. Has anyone else had such luck? I just ordered one and Im not yet sure which one I got. I am trying to use it as a memory card on a Toshiba e750 PocketPC.
Ty - 07.06.04, 23:39

I tried translating that Japanese site with the pics of the old and new packages, and it seems that there was some discussion that the new drives would not be recognized by digital cameras but would still be read by PCs. In the case of my pocketPC, I would like to know if anyone has any more details on the new "steps" creative has taken to protect the drive and if it is applicable to anything but cameras. I also hear that they were using a hidden partition to fool the camera into not recognizing it, but this could be corrected by deleting it and formatting with win98.

Ok. Just received my Muvo2 and a SanDisk 512mb CF card. Got the Muvo2 goin' within 5 minutes and it works perfect with the newest firmware. Only quirk is that the CF card only shows 468.7mb after format. I also "hi-jacked" the micro drive in my Ipod Mini. I now got 2 4Gb MD's for my digi-cam. Great!
A.M. - 11.06.04, 12:43

Hi, A.M. could you tell me how to "hijacak" the micro drive from iPod? I have a newer version muvo and the micro drive does not work in digi-cam.

Drats...ordered a MuVo and it arrived today, but it is the new model. Can we believe Creative when they say the drive can't be removed? Has anyone tried to remove the drive from the new style. I haven't even opened the plastic yet, am considering a return of it if no one can get the drive out safely.
Lew of Vividere (link) - 12.06.04, 06:02

New Drive is supposedly IDE and doesn't support CF devices. Does anyone ahve any idea whether an IDE only card could be read by pocket PC or a desktop? I also got a new Muvo the other day and am debating returning it...

Hi,

So does that mean that the new version of the muvo does allow you to remove the 4GB drive? Has anyone tried this yet? If so, I'm sure everyone would appreciate it if you can give us details of how you remove the drive and if it works on your camera. Thanks so much in advance.

I¡¦ve ordered a MuVo2 4.0GB, and received it.
The microdrive is still removable.
But, I¡¦ve another problem!
The microdrive has a serial number with 44C on the end.
This one will not work in the Nikon D-70.
The camera tells you: incompatible card

You can read about this on:

Is there someone who knows a manner to let this card works?

jack144 - 22.06.04, 01:21

Hi: guys
Do not buy the creative mp3 player for that 4GB microdrive, the MD which is in the new model of mp3 player will never work with any brand of camera. Because I have a sony F828, I just got one of the mp3 player and and took the microdrive out(the new serie part number ended as 44C). After I put it into my camera, a error message shows up says"CF card error". So I called sony and hatachi for help, but nothing they could. The hatachi told me that I can only buy the microdrive individually which specific made for digital cameras, and it will cost you around $500 each. Those campanies just want make more money.
Patrick - 22.06.04, 02:04

Still, there must be a way to use the new cards. There is a difference between the old and the new cards. There also must be a way to crack this lock.
Who?
ava (link) - 22.06.04, 04:52

Did anyone had some luck getting the new 44C mircodrive to work with any DigiCams? or personal/packet PC's? I received mine (with black front, US model) and I dont believe I can return it, since i started using it (amazon is the store)
Does DOWNGRADING the firmware on the MUVO itself help solve the problem? Thanks for all your help.

Anyone knows about a kind of cardreader is which the Hitachi 4GB 44c-type can be used as an external drive for the PC?
rastaman - 04.07.04, 22:05

I just pull out an 44c from Muvo, it did not work with D100, try format under WIN XP for FAT and FAT32 both through USB card-reader, it did format close to 4GB, and I can read-write to it. but D100 says "This card cannot be use". I notice that all other CF card is reading as active partition, but not 44C. anyone know howtomake it activeaslogical drive?

I'm in the chicken and egg situation where I need to update the firmware of the muvo2 to 1.10.01 so that it can read my CF card (crucial) but I don't have the orginnal MD as I bought the shell from ebay, does anyone know of a method to replace the firmware with out having to borrow a microdrive from someone? Hi YOU GUYS THIS IS !!!!!!!!!!IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got the new Muvo with the locked Microdrive!
Ive tried to use it in my cam but it didn work .. a guy above my post told to get the partitioning tool and and checked the drive! He found hidden and invalid partitions removed them and said that the muvimicrodrive worked fine Then! so i dont know if his was the locked one or an old version!!! I definately got the new one and i also got the bad Partitions! is there anyone out there willing to risk the try to erase these Partitions and see if it works! ??
In my case i was able to not damage the warranty seal so that i could retourn the muvo (its damn bad as an mp3 Player;-))) would anyone risk to try my suggestion???
Erase all partitions and then try the hdd in the cam!
In my opinion it should work couse they cant change the produktion in just 2 Weeks!! so it must be the software!!

Hello, I'm from germany

I have now the newest Muvo2 4GB with the 45C Hitachi MicroDrive

My Tests with the Muvo and CF-Cards:
64 MB Sandisk = does not work
256 MB Sandisk Ultra2 = works fine
(with the newest firmeware!!! 1.11.01)

My Test with the MicroDrive 4GB (45C):
Canon PowerShot S40 = does not work
Canon PowerShot S50 = does not work

formating with Partition Manager 2004 Demo from http://www.7tools.com WORKS !
With my 6in1 Card Reader I can now use it as HardDisk but not in a camera.

So i replaced the 4 GB MD in the Muvo2, but now nothing works
Display says only: Creative -> Muvo2
and then HANGS :-(

holding the Menue Button while inserting the accu/batterie while bring the recovery mode, but there works nothing
it hangs
I even get no Media Error Message !!

Now the CF 256 MB Ultra2 Card from Sandisk does not work anymore !!

Can someone help? Does someone have a working image of the original MD? and the tool to restore it?
over a 6in1 Card Reader??

Thanks !!!

Some Info I found:

44C and 45C are no CF-Cards
they are only useable as a harddisk.
Only the ATA/ATT Mode is active.

Some Cameras can use them (i'm not sure about that)
i have heared that someone get it working with a Canon G5.

My dilemma, need help.
I got toda a muvo and took out 4gb MD Version 43B.
Downgraded with a lexar 512mb 4x P/N2250 Rev.A without a problem.

Tried to format the md in my pc cf/md slot and failed at around 98%.
The dmd is now not seen by device, no camera, no PDA, no CF reader, no other MP3 player etc.

Even a reinstall of the movu does not work anymore. Always media error is known.

I can hear the head is stepping inside the MD and after a while it stops.

I tried also partition tools, but the microdrive is not recognized.

Thanks for any help
Peter

Anyone has a recovery tool or know how to fix it?
Peter - 27.07.04, 14:38

Since this list helped me so much I thought I'd share my success story. I bought the Nomad Muvo 2 (4 gig) off of ebay, the shell only, no card, for $20. I had to buy a new battery and got that from ecost.com. My first attempt at putting in a Scandisk 256 meg card failed. I kept getting a "media error" for everything I tried. Then I flipped the card over. This was worse. It never got past the "Muvo2" screen. So I flipped the card back over to the way I had it originally. Still got the "media error". So, I knew the card was in the right direction. You want the backside of the card facing the circuitry. The front side of the card faces the backside of the case. I emailed the guy that I bought it from and after some discussion of possible problems, he sent me a link of the various cards that work/fail/or both. That link is http://www.mortier.free-online.co.uk/MuV..
My Sandisk 256 is on the "conflicting reports" column. So, I tried a Sandisk 512. It works! Then I had to figure out that to get it to connect to the computer, I had to plug the USB cord into the computer box itself and not a hub. So, I hope this will save some frustrations for somebody in the future! Thanks for posting such an informative discussion.
Barbara S. (link) - 29.07.04, 11:29

@Chris
I have the same problem. But I had it working for a little while. Today I turned
it on and now it hangs at Muvo². Tried to Reload firmware etc. Nothing works. It doesn´t get recognized over USB. I think something happened to the firmware
onboard. Is there a chance to transfer it to the board again ? Anyone can give me some hints ?
JHoerg - 01.08.04, 17:47

For anyone who bought the mp3 player in the last week to use the 4GB inside it, I recommend that you put a hold on that idea. Creative Labs might have changed something on those microdrives.

I tried formatting the 4GB drive as Fat-32 while it was connected to the computer, but I wasn't able to get it to work either in the camera, player or even the computer. Initially it would just hang on, "Muvo2", but then I noticed that the tiny board (where the "menu" button is attached to) was not inserted into the main board. I inserted it properly and now when I plug in the power while I hold down the "menu" button, it brings me up to the, "Recovery Mode v1.00" screen. However, it does not allow me to press any other buttons after that so I can run the recovery. I took out the 4GB drive and tried to read it using the 6in1 reader, but it shows as "unreadable from within the "Computer Management" screen. From my Minolta Dimage 7i, it also says, "unreadable". I'm stumped on what I can try next. Any suggestions?
Abe - 04.08.04, 02:09

I formatted my 4gb card in the camera. I have the Canon EOS Digital and it has the Fat32 inluded in the camera firmware. So that allows the formatting to take place. You can always try formatting it that way. If you've tried already... Sorry it didn't work for you. This can be a catch 22 for most people and what they are using it for. I guess that's the price we pay for doing it this way....
Thanks.
Ray - 04.08.04, 06:22

Hi Abe,

Now we're sitting in the same boot.
I tried to get an RMA from hitachi, but they refused it cause it's an OEM version that have to be returned to mfg.

I'm trying now to get it run in direct mode, without any usb interface.

I'll will keep the community posted if I'm sucessful.

Wish me luck.

Has anyone tried reading the "metadata" of both a drive that works and one that does not?

Does anyone have or know of software that can do that?

Just a thought.

hi all, got any idea which mfg/model number are soldered in and that can't be used as microdrive? and microdrive WILL NOT work on other devices. cos i am thinking of getting one on ebay but dont have a clue with the NEW Creative mfg/model number.

Unforutnately I purchased the Muvo2 Version 2 (FG Part#: 70PD052300014) shell before knowing what I'm getting myself into. I have ran accross some info online about copy an image of the original 4GB onto the CF card. Has anyone out there were able to get the version2 working with a CF card? If anyone has an image of the Version 2 4G MD?
Dan - 31.08.04, 22:31

I'm another guy who missed those MD messages & bought a Muvo2 last Sunday.. Now, the MD didnt work on my 300D & worst of all it couldnt even work if I assemble it back to my Muvo .. what can I do ... Pls HELP HELP HELP
Henry - 31.08.04, 22:42

I have ran across a few posts stating about reloading the original image with the hidden file on there will get it to work. If someone can email me an image of the version2 would be great, boostsfed@yahoo.com thanks.
Dan - 01.09.04, 02:43

Hi Guys,

All different tries to reactivte the microdrive have been unlucky.

Looks like if we erase that area, the md doesn't work anymore.

Hitachi has no interest to help cause it's an oem drive.

So be careful if you buy one over an ebay auction...if you fail, the md is for the garbage.

If someone from hitachi or creative can help I would like to donate 50$ for the first working solution!

Good News! I found the street price of 2GB Microdrive below than USD140 now!! Many Retail Shops running a trade-in program by giving the old memory card to the shops.... I just trade-in a old 16MB CF Card into 2GB Hitachi Microdrive as it work for many D-SLR!!

Haha... the trade-in program only run at Hong Kong and China!

I'm new here , thank's to Alex Bernstain from Canon Digital Hacking Group from Yahoo , who sold and ship me from USA to Canada a old model (April 2004) Creative Muvo2 4GB. I have the Canon Powershot S1 IS ,i'm formating the Hitachi Microdrive 4GB in my digital camera no computer needed. After a 5sec formating the microdrive I see 3.8GB capacity , now with this monster card I can take 5000 picture and shoot true 640x480 30fps progressive
little compression for beautiful video(the video take 120MB/min)over 40min.
I buy a Sandisk USB 2 reader Compact Flash I/II to transfer to the computer , a 4GB in less 10 min , with my camera because it just USB 1.1 connection i have to wait 100 min to transfer the Hitachi Microdrive 4GB.
The power consumption of the Microdrive tested with my camera are very good. My camera use 4 AA 2050 Duracell Ni-MH , with this 4 AA baterry I shoot 40 min video , take 230 pictures and transfer to the computer during 100min over USB 1.1 and the baterry it not power dead !
Oh ya today i'm buy a Sandisk 512 Ultra II (10MB/s transfer speed)for 90$ canadian. I'm flashed my Muvo2 with the last firmware verssion : MuVo^2(4GB_uHDD)PCFW_US_1_11_01.exe this working fine for me and i'm very hapy the sound quality are great and clear.
I'm doing some speed test with my new Muvo2 , I transfered 512MB of music from my computer to the player in just 1min and 15sec , wow it extremly fast.

I have one of the older muvo2 shells and have sucessfully extracted the 4GB drive for use in my D70; however, I have never gotten the shell to work with another CF card. I've tried putting back the 4GB drive and it lets me try to update the firmware, but only gets as far as "erasing FW" then it goes to media error.

I have an 03 sandisk 512 card that I have been trying to get to work, but all I get is media error. I've checked all the connections and it doesn't look like anything is broken on the ribbon cable (at least that my eye can see)

I'm unable to reload firmware and the PC doesn't see the muvo when I connect the cable.

Help!

Removed it to try some other cards (IO Data 128MB (made by Hitachi), SanDisk 32 (i know why bother?)) when I put the PQI back in, it started playing on the same song it was on when removed.
